‘The Cookie Monster’ wants to take bite out of Berdugo at Lion Fight 35

Get to know Jafar Toshev, who makes his debut with Lion Fight this Friday when he takes on Yeison “Yayyoo” Berdugo at Lion Fight 35 live at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Their bout will launch the main card that airs live on AXS TV Fights in the United States as well as on Fight Network throughout Canada, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Q: Inquiring minds what to know … how did you get the nickname “The Cookie Monster”?
A: “Cookie Monster” comes from my cookie addiction. My mom bakes the best cookies ever.

Q: Where are you originally from?
A: I was born in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on August 30, 1995, and moved to America in 2001. I live in Brooklyn, NY.

Q: What are some of your past accomplishments in Muay Thai and combat sports?
A: I won the WKA North American tournament title back-to-back 2014 and 2015 – lightweight division, Glory Rules. The Friday Night Fights full rules lightweight title, the ISKA United States Muay Thai title at 132 lbs., and the IKF National Tournament lightweight title.

Q: Tell us about your training and your best attributes as fighter.
A: I work in the day as a driver and train in the evening. My strong point is my die-hard attitude in the ring. I go in with everything I’ve got and my attitude is I’m going to knock him out or he is going to knock me out. I don’t go into the ring with the win or lose mentality. I go in to hurt him before he tries to hurt me.

Q: Do you think you will be nervous at all fighting on such a big stage and on live TV?
A: Nah, I’m not nervous at all. When I get in the ring I block everything out. It’s just me and him. For me every fight is a championship fight.

Q: How do you think you will be able to beat Berdugo and what would defeating him mean to you and your career?
A: No game plan in particular. I’m just going to get in there and do my job. A victory over Berdugo would be the first step in achieving my goal and that’s to be a world champion.

The Toshev-Berdugo matchup leads off the main card of Lion Fight 35 which has a pair of title bouts at topping the marquee. In the main event, two-division champion “Smokin” Jo Nattawut defends his super welterweight crown against Thai legend Kengsiam Nor Sripueng. And in the co-main event, reigning women’s lightweight queen Antonina “The Panther” Shevchenko puts her belt on the line against challenger Magali Foroni of France.

The Lion Fight 35 main card will air live on AXS TV Fights with a start time of 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. with commentary from renowned duo “The Voice” Michael Schiavello and UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich plus ring reporting from veteran MMA journalist Ron Kruck.
