Lion Fight named Promotion of the Year

Prominent female combat sports website AwakeningFighters.com has named Lion Fight as the Promotion of the Year for 2016.

Lion Fight staged five women’s title fights during the year, including three on the Lion Fight 31 card that took place at Foxwoods Resort Casino on Friday, Sept. 2 live on AXS TV Fights and Fight Network.

“We just had a big year for female Muay Thai and this always makes the Best Promotion category an interesting one to watch,” said Rew Mitchell of AwakeningFighters.com

“The Muay Thai community always gets behind anyone who represents female athletes well and Lion Fight definitely does that. It’s also worthy of note that several current Lion Fight fighters appear in and win several other categories.

“A good year all-around for Lion Fight and the Awakening Fighter audience has shown its appreciation. I also personally thank you for always putting on great shows and I wish you all the best for 2017.”

Awakening Fighters also handed out of several individual awards, and Lion Fight competitors captured three of the most significant honors.

Topping the list was Lion Fight women’s lightweight champion Antonina Shevchenko who was named Fighter of the Year, edging out Lion Fight women’s welterweight champion Jorina Baars in the voting.

Baars was named the Personality of the Year, and she shared Fight of the Year honors with Angela Whitley for their main event title battle at Lion Fight 31.

Lion Fight competitors also received several nominations for other awards: Whitley (Newcomer of the Year – fourth); Baars (Inspirational Fighter of the Year – second); Shevchenko (Inspirational Fighter of the Year – third); Iman Barlow (Personality of the Year – fourth).

Lion Fight put a substantial amount of effort into bringing its elite female fighters to forefront last year, and that will continue in 2017. Reigning women’s super bantamweight champion Iman Barlow will defend her belt against Meryem Uslu on Feb. 3 at Lion Fight 34 in Las Vegas, and women’s lightweight champion Antonina Shevchenko is slated to put her title on the line against Aleide Lawant at Lion Fight 35 on March 3 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

“We have received such outstanding feedback on our women’s bouts, and this recognition from Awakening Fighters tops everything off in a fantastic way,” said Scott Kent, CEO and President of Lion Fight Promotions.

“Lion Fight has a great deal of pride in its roster of women’s fighters and we intend on making several prominent bouts in 2017 which I hope all our fans around the world will enjoy.”

Bennie Palmore, Lion Fight’s chief photographer, cracked the top-10 in voting for Photographer of the Year.

Lion Fight 34 will air live on AXS TV Fights in the United States as well as on Fight Network throughout Canada, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The start time is 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. with commentary from renowned duo “The Voice” Michael Schiavello and UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich.
